Cathy UngemachI hold a BFA from Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY, and currently live in Wayne, NJ with my husband, two children and my two dogs Rico and Rex. My inaugural exhibition as a professional artist takes place in November-December 2014, at Opa, a Greek restaurant in Wayne, NJ. I have always made art. I am fascinated by changing light and color, and how they affect the perception of shapes. I really enjoy the twists and turns of the colors and how the light bends and manipulates the shapes into something whole. My favorite tool is the brush. With just a few strokes I can communicate a story, a feeling. In my undergraduate work I started as a graphic design major, but found myself moving toward children’s book illustration. I used watercolor to convey stories for children to take and make their own. A few years later, my intense observation of color and light inspired me to begin painting landscapes on canvas, using oils as my primary medium. I seem to gravitate to water. I even live on the water. Most of my work has some type of water element. Recently I have felt like lingering on one subject for a while. My latest series, water lilies, concentrates on a single subject and really peels away the layers. I enjoy working with the depth of the water and the color that the sun brings out. As the series progressed, I was less concerned with detail and more concerned with the play of light and color. I look forward to working even larger and with bolder colors.
